We are delighted to have 3 authentic local characters, Silver Creek Outfitters guides, to enliven the experience of our beginner to expert fly fishing guests. Stanley residents Verlon Herndon and Julie Meissner have been shepherding our guests on fishing expeditions for many years. This year Riley Berman joins the team and will lead weekly fishing activities on the Ranch. Sundays throughout the season, guests can hone their skills with Riley at the casting clinic on the front lawn, and later relax on the porch before dinner during a free ranging discussion, “Past the Cast”. Verlon will step in for Sunday’s activities when Riley’s on the River. Fly tying classes are offered by appointment.

“There is no bad day when you get to be in the Sawtooth Valley floating and fishing the Salmon River!”, Riley enthusiastically proclaims. A Ketchum, Idaho native and student of the area’s rich outdoor life, Riley graduated with a major in English from Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO, then returned to guide and continue to explore this area and the activities that drew him back. Riley also is an avid birder, biker and skier, but says he is happiest when on the water – fishing, guiding, kayaking, rafting, float tubing, and wading.

Verlon Herndon

Verlon Herndon

Oklahoma native Verlon Herndon was introduced to Stanley and the Salmon River by a National Geographic photograph. After seeing it, he just had to come – and he’s been here ever since.  Verlon’s knowledge of his craft is legendary, but he never loses sight of “the essential, simple pleasure of fishing”. Verlon has designed and built his own log home in Stanley, is an avid backcountry skier and each day savors his decision to move into that beautiful photo.

Julie Meissner

Julie Meissner

Julie Meissner, a central Oregon native, came to enjoy a winter of skiing in Stanley and has never left. Julie founded Sawtooth Fishing Guides and was the initial prime mover of the sport in our area. Julie has built two houses from the ground up, — in Oregon and Stanley — is an avid backpacker, backcountry skier and fly tier, and has an unlimited treasury of stories to share of life in Stanley. Julie finds Stanley the ideal place to enjoy her lifelong love of the outdoors and its sports.
